That’s 3 race entries in 3 fabulous locations, 3 tee shirts, and 3 hot meals.
Please note all fees are non-refundable. If you can’t make it to the Hoedown, we will mail you your tee shirt or you can let us know to give it to a fellow surfer. Or you’re welcome to send another competitor in your place by contacting the event director in advance of race day.
2011 & earlier Hoedown info:
This was probably the 6th annual festival — we’re not positive. Either way, it was awesome. You could feel the love, man, all through Hobuck Beach Resort. Competitors and guests packed the place, coming from California, Texas, BC, Sweden, Oregon, and Washington state. In fact, only two of the 11 gold medals awarded went to Washington paddlers, so the word is spreading and the stoke is building.
We had 40 surf competitors, but it took over two dozen volunteers, judges and safety crew to pull this thing off over two days, and a simple thanks is all they asked for. We tried to go a little better than that by providing dinner and a tee shirt to them but they were there for the good times with new and old friends. Huge props go to the eagle-eyed judges who couldn’t put down their binocs for fear of missing a move, and to the gnarly, brave safety boaters and shore sweepers who successfully schlepped swimming surfers to shore. Plus, we needed scribes, score tabulators, timers, flag holders, and even a fire marshall. All in all a tremendous effort by a fine team.
Many thanks to the Makah community for the hospitality, especially Linda Colfax at Linda’s Wood Fired Kitchen who prepared the salmon dinner that was the consensus “best meal I’ve ever had at a paddling event”; Tribe General Manager Meri Parker who helped immensely behind the scenes; and tribal member Gary Ray who told stories and sang to us on Saturday night. The warmth of the locals makes this venue more than just another weekend of paddling.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and our paddling community, our raffle raised $800 for two much-deserving causes. Check here to read about where the money went, and about the sweeeeet prizes donated by our generous sponsors.
